My Response To The BBC Article- Should You Switch To E-Cigarettes?

I recently read an interesting article in the BBC News about smokers of traditional tobacco cigarettes switching to e-cigarettes. The article offered a lot of great information about the choices that people are making in modern society in regards to e-cigarettes versus tobacco cigarettes, as well as the health differences between the two products. The article does a great job of being objective and listing the pros and cons of each product, as well as information about using electronic cigarettes in public.

According to the article, in 2015 there are 2.6 million current or ex-smokers on the UK who now use e-cigarettes, which is nearly 4 times the amount that was documented in 2010. The assumption for the primary reason behind this is health concerns. Although many researchers say e-cigarettes are a less harmful alternative to tobacco cigarettes, their limited history make it difficult to study the long term effects with certainty. What we can be certain about is the terrible effects tobacco cigarettes have on their users.

Users of tobacco cigarettes are about 3 times more likely to develop a stroke than the average person. Tobacco cigarettes contain over 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. Inhaling these toxic chemicals leads to over 600,000 global deaths per year from passive smoking throughout the world, as well as 80% of lung cancer deaths. The average smoker shortens their life span by around 10 years, according to the article. E-Cigarette vapor contains much lower levels of chemicals, the Public Health Board of England estimates vaping is 95% safer than tobacco smoking.

The article also briefly discusses how there are some disagreements in regards to whether or not vaping should be allowed in public areas. The Action on Smoking and Health Group (ASH) believes that vaping should be encouraged as a tobacco substitute. Other institutions disagree, such as the Welsh Government and the British Medical Association, as they want it banned from enclosed public spaces.

Regardless of whether or not it is allowed in public, with the exception of the long term health uncertainty, many studies seem to provide that e-cigarette use is less harmful than traditional tobacco cigarette use. There is no arguing that traditional tobacco cigarettes are very harmful to your health, so considering switching to e-cigarettes may be a viable option.
